Family Life

Hey everybody. I am getting adjusted to family life here in Getxo. It has definitely been frustrating at times, and it is a big change going from my regular life to, basically the equivalent of living with my grandparents.  But if my grandparents didn't speak a word of English... My family is an old man (Higinio) and woman (Rosa). They are very nice, though Higinio can be a little bit of a hard ass. It is difficult to communicate at times, but I know my Spanish will improve a ton from this experience.

As for the other aspects, Spain is very fun. The other night I was able to go down to the beach late at night to just hang out, something I have never been able to do at home. The town is surrounded by these Lord of the Rings style misty mountains, which look awesome especially at night in the background of the sea. As for night life, I need to figure out how to go out to bars and spend less money.

Being here makes me feel we are clearly doing things wrong in the US. Almost everyone here is skinny, and in Bilbao/Getxo there is virtually no crime. You can get bomb ass food for pretty cheap, and the markets are full of fresher, more local, and better products. I also have not seen much of the American practice of eating any fruit whenever, no matter the season. For instance, right now oranges are in season, so everyone is eating oranges. Local oranges too, not shipped from Brazil to Pennsylvania. Suck on that, Whole Foods. Things also seem more energy efficient here. For instance, on the metro the doors only open if someone needs to get on/off. Also, lights are only turned on when needed, there are much less 24 hour lights in places such as an apartment building hallway/lobby.

Alright, enough bashing on the US(but not really). I will try to take some more pictures and post them up soon. Hopefully gonna be shutting shit down in the club tonight. Hasta luego amigos.

  1. Side note: There was a band playing american songs in this bar last night. Strangely comforting...
